Wirral Borough of Culture 2024

Wirral is Borough of Culture for the Liverpool City Region in 2024. It’s the second time that Wirral has held the title and follows an incredible year of culture, creativity and ideas in 2019.

Our line-up of major events and activities will reach thousands of residents and visitors and cover the whole of the borough. The year will feature unmissable experiences in some of our best-loved public spaces.

Look out for massive magical moments for all ages to enjoy, inspired by Wirral’s unique location and heritage. There will be lots of activities led by fantastic Wirral-based creatives and organisations.

We’ll be celebrating the borough’s past and looking ahead to its future. We’ll be honouring Wirral icons. We’ll be singing, dancing, playing, watching, listening, writing, painting, making, cheering and clapping - and we hope you will be too.

We want to give everyone in Wirral the opportunity to experience culture during 2024. Nearly all Borough of Culture events and projects will be free to enjoy, with a special programme of events and projects for children and young people.

We’re also working with trailblazing Wirral-based partners to ensure the programme is as environmentally sustainable as possible.

Borough of Culture grants

As part of Borough of Culture, we're committed to making arts, culture and heritage accessible to all during the year. Grants were available for projects across the borough. Applications closed in March 2024.

These grants were made possible through funding from the UK Shared Prosperity Fund and the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority, with support from Wirral Council.

How is Borough of Culture funded?

Borough of Culture is awarded annually on a rotational basis to one of the six local authorities that make up the Liverpool City Region. It is part of the Combined Authority’s culture programme.

The Borough of Culture is part of the 1% for Culture initiative. This commits at least 1% of the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority’s annual gainshare funding (£300k) to cultural projects and activities.

Wirral Borough of Culture 2024 is led by Wirral Council. It is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund with the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority as the lead authority.
