History of Flaybrick cemetery

Flaybrick Memorial Gardens, formally Flaybrick Cemetery, was opened on 30th May 1864 and is a designated conservation area covering 26 acres.

Officially named Birkenhead Cemetery and covering 16.5 acres, the site was designed by Edward Kemp who was the Superintendent of Birkenhead Park and a renowned landscape gardener and contained adjoining Church of England and Non-Conformist Chapels together with a Catholic chapel at the lower, north end of the site.

The cemetery was renamed Flaybrick Cemetery in 1956 and eventually closed for new burials in 1975.

As a renowned arboretum, containing around 80 species of trees, the cemetery was redesignated as a Memorial Garden in 1996 and together with being listed as grade 2* in the English Heritage register of Parks and Gardens of Specific Historic Interest, in 2003 gained accreditation as a Significant Cemetery in Europe.
