Cremations

There are two chapels at Landican crematorium in Wirral. We can offer three types of service

  • a direct cremation where no one attends
  • a 20-minute service
  • a 40-minute service

Cremations can be booked from Monday to Friday.

Arranging a cremation

To arrange a cremation, you should approach a funeral director of your choice. They will look after the deceased's body and help to organise the funeral and cremation.

They will plan and book your service and complete the paperwork. They will also guide you through the process and give you all options.

Some funeral directors may provide an option for a 'direct cremation.' This is a cremation where no service takes place and no mourners are present

Applicant for cremation

One person must sign relevant forms. This person will become the applicant for cremation. They will be the main point of contact with Wirral cemeteries and crematoria service. We may contact them about records or the options for the cremated remains of your loved one.

Chapel service options

Your funeral director will discuss service options with you and make all the arrangements with us. This includes chapel bookings, music and digital options. The following information is for guidance. If you have any specific requests, please discuss these with your funeral director.

Options for cremated remains

Following a cremation, there are several options available for cremated remains.

Burial

Cremated remains can be buried in new graves. These can accommodate further cremated remains or coffin burials in the future. It may be possible to bury cremated remains in an existing grave, with relevant permission.

Columbarium

Cremated remains can be placed above ground in a columbarium niche. The memorial plaque on the front of the niche is designed by the family and is included in the price. We have niches available at Landican Cemetery that accommodate 2 sets of cremated remains.

Scattering remains

There are two gardens of remembrance at Landican Crematorium. We can refer to our records of previous scatters to ensure that family members can be laid to rest together. Appointments can be made for family members to attend scatters. Unattended scatters take place 2 weeks after the day of the funeral.

Taking remains away

Cremated remains can be taken away for private scatter or burial elsewhere. You may wish to keep them at home until the family is ready to lay them to rest. A certificate of cremation is always issued. Permission must be obtained before any cremated remains are scattered or buried.

Scatter tubes and other keepsake urns can be bought from this website.

Storing the remains at Landican

We can keep the cremated remains safe at Landican for a 4-week period. This is to give families more time to reach a decision. It is usually a good idea to make an appointment with the cemeteries office at Landican. We will talk you through the options if this is something you are unsure about.

There are various after-cremation memorials available.
