History of Landican Cemetery and Crematorium
Landican Cemetery opened on 22 October 1934. The cemetery includes 128 commonwealth service war graves of World War II together with a Cross of Sacrifice.
In view of the demand for cremation, Birkenhead Corporation decided to include a crematorium within its new cemetery. The style of architecture chosen for the chapel was a free rendering of the Byzantine period. It retains its interesting features of the mosaic panelling representing Biblical scenes.
Today Landican Crematorium continues to be set within Landican Cemetery and includes two gardens of remembrance which are managed to provide a peaceful setting for both our visitors and to provide a safe environment for our varied wildlife.
