Smart meters are the next generation of gas and electricity meters, replacing outdated analogue meters with state-of-the-art tech. It lets you keep track of how much gas and electricity you're using, as well as what it's costing you, in near-real time.
Smart Meters can:
- Give you 100% accurate energy bills – no more surprise bills or overpaying on your account
- Check your energy usage – how much does it cost you to boil the kettle or run your washing machine? Your smart meter can help identify high energy use activities so you can plan or make changes to your lifestyle
- Look after your budgets - having a smart meter installed doesn't automatically save money. But the handy display helps you keep on top of household costs
What if I am a private tenant or landlord?
It depends on who pays the energy bills. If you are a tenant and your name is on the bill, then legally you do not need to request permission from your landlord unless your tenancy agreement includes a clause such as “No structural alteration”. It is however, recommended that you inform your landlord before you decide to install one.
If you are a landlord, you can ask your tenants to fit a smart meter if it’s specified in the letting contract. However, if they pay the bills, you’ll need to ask your tenants before you do.
You do not need internet access to have a smart meter, as they rely on their own independent signal.
