We are Wirral leaders

Strong, values-led leadership is central to achieving our ambitions here at Wirral. Shaped by colleagues across the organisation, our Leadership Behaviour Framework describes what great leadership looks like at all levels and sets the expectations for how we lead at Wirral Council.

Our leaders recently came together at our quarterly Leadership Conference to reflect on and develop their leadership, both as individuals and as one collective leadership team.

The theme of the conference focused around the ‘Leading Self’ aspect of our Leadership Behaviour Framework. ‘Take Care of You’ is a behaviour within Leading Self, and an inspiring leadership development professional, Rene Barrett, hosted a session as part of the conference to help our leaders reflect on why wellbeing is so important for leadership. Colleagues also celebrated some of the great things happening at Wirral and spent the afternoon working together as a leadership team on cross-cutting themes in our new Council Plan, discussing how we can work more collaboratively as one council to deliver for our residents.

Our leadership conferences are an important part of creating a culture where great leadership is developed, nurtured and thrives at all levels. Whatever your role in the organisation, you’ll be supported to enable each other to achieve great things and be the difference.

Leading Self
Act with purpose Know yourself Be human
Be brave Take care of you Fly the flag for Wirral
What does this look like? What doesn't this look like?
Act with purpose I make the best use of my time, focusing on what will have the most impact. Trying to do everything rather than focusing on what will make the most difference for our customers.
Know yourself I am aware of and consider the impact of my own working style on others. Trying to fit the mould of a 'typical leader' rather than embracing the value of your own individual strengths and style.
Be human I care and show compassion. I listen to understand, not to defend. Not being visible or authentic. Not taking the time to understand others, their needs and perspectives.
Be brave I don't shy away from challenges or difficult decisions. Reluctance to try new things and experiment.
Take care of you I take time to recharge and know that I can't pour from an empty cup. Not prioritising or taking accountability for your own wellbeing.
Fly the flag for Wirral I am a strong ambassador for the council and take pride in promoting the great work we do. Speaking negativity about the council to others. Not celebrating when we do things well.
