The Summer Reading Challenge is developed by The Reading Agency, delivered in partnership with public libraries, and funded by Arts Council England. Each year, the Challenge motivates around 700,000 children across the UK to keep reading over the summer holidays.
The Summer Reading Challenge encourages children aged 4 to 11 to borrow books from their local library over the summer. The reading they do is shown to improve their reading skills and confidence, avoiding the “summer dip” in reading fluency.
Each year there is a different theme and different incentives to collect. Children read at least six books over the summer and collect rewards for reading anything they enjoy. Children can sign up at their local library or online and it’s free to take part.
There is also a mini-challenge for younger readers, to help them become “reading ready” for school.
