Summer programme 2024

Green Bibliofest for families

This summer, Green Bibliofest is set to enchant families with a festival celebrating storytelling and creativity, alongside nature and sustainability.

From mid-July onwards Wirral Libraries, Birkenhead Park and Wirral Country Park will host a range of activities and live performances.

With a diverse range of vibrant activities and the joy of live performances, Green Bibliofest promises something for all the family.

Across the festival programme, libraries across Wirral will be transformed into event and performances spaces, with workshops and theatre taking centre stage. Families will also be offered an opportunity to go beyond library buildings and explore green spaces including Birkenhead and Wirral Country Parks. There are dozens of events, with several each week right through the summer holidays, from a rhyming story about a little robot made from junk, a treasure hunt in the park and an opportunity to make pollinators, including ones that sting! Meet fabulous flowers, noisy garden birds with music and song, make dandelions from recycled materials, paint pebbles for your garden and have your family portrait taken with a handmade camera made from reusable parts.

Nearly all events and performances are free, with a selection of drop-in and bookable events.

Summer Reading Challenge

Wirral Libraries Service and the Reading Agency are pleased to announce that the theme for this year's Summer Reading Challenge is Marvellous Makers!

The 2024 Summer Reading Challenge will be a celebration of the creative arts. We’ll be inspiring children to express themselves in creative ways, tap into a world of imagination and storytelling, and – of course – to read! When they join Marvellous Makers, children will be introduced to our wonderful characters, brought to life by the brilliant children’s illustrator, Natelle Quek. Our characters are all part of their local creative club, where they enjoy coming up with fun creations, exploring ideas and telling stories together. This summer, they’re creating pieces inspired by their favourite reads. They’re excited because there’s a big festival coming up where everyone can show their work to their community, friends and family! However, the day before the festival, some objects mysteriously go missing from the club’s creative toolbox. Can the festival still go ahead? Children will join our characters as they search for the missing objects to complete their creations.

The Challenge is aimed at 4 to 11 year olds, and children can take part at any Wirral Library. Children are challenged to read at least 6 books over the summer holidays.

From 6 July to 7 September, children will be able to take part in the Challenge and as they read they will be rewarded with stickers, certificates, and medals.

Visit your nearest library for full details and to sign up in person, or take part online on the Summer Reading Challenge website.
